Types of Projects

The WeST programmers have years of experience developing a wide variety of web applications, and routinely consults with A&S deans, faculty and staff in order to ensure secure, cost-effective and productive application deployment by internal developers as well as third party contractors. Below is a sampling of the types of applications developed by our programming team. To see more details on specific applications, please visit our portfolio.

Administrative Function

We work on a variety of projects for the A&S Dean's Office, including the Arts & Sciences Departmental Budget and the Classroom Search application.

Academic Function

The programming team has years of experience developing web-based function critical to the academic mission of the university. Current examples include the Online Course Synopsis, the Short-Term Illness Notification Form, the Course Change Request System, and the A&S Council Election System.

Job/Program Applications

Our application forms were created to provide a way for individuals to apply online for a specific program or job.

Registration/Request For Proposals

We support requests to automate specific registration processes, including a way to capture proposal information.

Seminar/Activity Calendars/News

Our dynamic activity calendar allows departmental staff to administer and display their current events within their web sites via an online interface.

Consultation

WeST programmers also routinely consult with faculty and staff who are in the process of developing their own web applications. Recently we've consulted on a variety of such projects, including Professor Dan Graham's Web-Based Testing in Economics, and Professor Miguel Garci-Gomez's Cibertextos.

Appointment Schedulers

We've developed a comprehensive, multi-user appointment scheduler that is in use by many departments.

Enterprise Applications

Web application programmers in WeST have participated in the delivery of enterprise-level function. The programming team was responsible for the design and development of the Duke Student Portfolio, and participated in the creation of the Undergraduate Portal in early 2004.

Data Collection Programs

We've developed various applications to capture information that is stored in a database and used internally within departments. The data may be accessed on the web or it may be downloaded by the user for manipulation and statistical analysis.

Online Communities

We receive requests to deliver web-based community function through the use of threaded discussion boards, blogs, and wikis. See the Tools page for more information.

Surveys

Survey support is provided by the Office for Web Services with the web-based ViewFlash Survey tool. Administrators are able to design and deploy their own custom surveys.
