Pass/Fail
Policy
Premajor students: You are not allowed to take a course on a pass/fail basis unless it is only graded on that basis (e.g., physical education courses, house courses, etc.).
Students with a declared major: With the instructor's consent, you can register for grading on a pass/fail basis in one elective course per semester or summer session. You may not take courses for a major, minor, or certificate program on the pass/fail option, including prerequisites. No other degree requirements, except the requirement for 34 course credits and continuation requirements, can be met by a course passed on the pass/fail option. A course taken on a pass/fail basis may not be taken later for a letter grade.
Note: Seminars and tutorials may not be taken on the pass/fail basis, unless the course is offered only on that basis.
With a Pass/Fail course, a "P" (passing) is not calculated into the GPA, but a "U" (failing) is part of that calculation.
Pratt students: the pass/fail policy is found on the Pratt Policies and Procedures page.
Procedure
If you elect to take a course pass/fail and the instructor agrees to let you enroll in the course on this basis, you should add the course normally through ACES and then submit a pass/fail permission form (PDF, 90KB), signed by the instructor, to the Office of the Registrar (705 Broad Street, Room 202) or to the Student Service Center (Room 101 Allen Building). This must be done before the close of the drop/add period.
