2007 Fellowship Recipients and Projects
The Academic Deans of Trinity College take pleasure in announcing the 2008 Deans' Summer Fellowship Program in support of undergraduate research and inquiry in the arts and sciences. The goals of the Deans' Summer Fellowship Program are to strengthen undergraduate research opportunities for Trinity College undergraduates, to enlarge the scope of undergraduate research conducted on and off campus during the summer, and to provide support to enable undergraduates to extend the period over which they engage in research.
Deans' Summer Research Fellowships of up to $2500 will be awarded to 20 or more Trinity College students in Summer 2008 for reasonable expenses associated with research projects planned for the summer. Priority will be given to applicants whose summer projects are preparatory to fall semester research independent study courses or extensions of ongoing research conducted within research courses in the spring semester. The fellowship may be applied toward travel and living expenses while conducting research on campus or elsewhere, e.g., in an archive, field site, laboratory, or library. In all cases, Deans' Summer Fellowship projects must be directed by a member of the Duke University faculty and conducted over a period of no less than three weeks during the summer months. Students may not be enrolled in courses during the period they designate as their fellowship period.
Trinity College students who are registered for the spring semester and who will continue at Duke in the fall are eligible to apply for a Deans' Summer Research Fellowship. (The condition of registration in the spring or fall is met with enrollment in Duke or Duke-approved study abroad programs.) Each recipient of a fellowship is required to report on the project outcome during the academic year at a University sponsored undergraduate research event such as Visible Thinking in April.
Application requires one copy of each of the following:
- A research proposal which should be no longer than three pages (typed, single-spaced) with three subtitled sections: (1) Background and Justification; (2) Long-term Objective of the Overall Research Project; (3) Short-term Objective/s, i.e., goal/s for the summer, including the research methodology. References and/or citations may be printed on a fourth sheet. Applicants must also state what other sources of funds are available to them including pending decisions on other award applications.
- Application cover sheet
- Proposed budget
- Preliminary IRB (Human Subjects form) statement. These forms are available here.
- A statement of support from the faculty research director at Duke assessing the feasibility of the proposed project, the ability of the student to complete it and the manner in which he or she will be in communication with the student during the fellowship period. The advisor should be appropiriate to evaluate the proposed project. A letter of recommendation from another faculty member in the student's major department or from an individual in the same or similar field of inquiry as the proposed research.
- An official Duke transcript. (See http://registrar.duke.edu/registrar/studentpages/student/transcriptinfo.htm
