Application Procedures
You may apply to the MMUF Program in one of two ways:
1. You may identify a faculty mentor with whom you would like to work over the two-year fellowship period, and a specific research topic, designed collaboratively with your chosen mentor, for the first summer of the program. If you choose this path, you will need to complete the Project Proposal Form (see below).
Ideally, your faculty mentor should be in the discipline in which you plan to major and in which you plan to attend graduate school. Frequently, our Fellows select their mentors from among the professors with whom they have become acquainted in a course. You also may be able to identify a faculty member whose research interests are close to yours, whether or not you have had him or her in a course. If you have questions about this process, please feel free to make an appointment to see one of the MMUF program coordinators, either Dr. Kerry Haynie (klhaynie@duke.edu) or Ms. Deborah Wahl (deborah.wahl@duke.edu), who will be happy to advise you.
BUT do not allow the issue of finding a faculty mentor prevent you from applying to this program:
2. You may apply without a faculty mentor or project, and if selected, you will work with the MMUF program coordinators to identify an appropriate mentor and then work with that mentor to design a research project for the first summer.
All applicants must submit:
- a completed Application Form;
- a Project Proposal Form (PDF format) if you are applying with a mentor;
- one Faculty Reference Form and a Mentor Support Letter, each in a sealed envelope, if you are applying with a mentor, OR
- two (2) Faculty Reference Forms, each in a sealed envelope, if you are applying without a mentor;
- an official Duke transcript, either in a signed/sealed envelope or mailed directly from the Registrar's Office
You can make an online transcript request through ACES, print a transcript request form from the web, or pick up a request form from the Registrar's Office. See: http://www.registrar.duke.edu/registrar/studentpages/student/transcriptinfo.htm
All materials should be included in a single package (a 9.5" x 12" envelope is recommended) and must be received by 5:00 p.m. on March 7, 2008. The application packet should be delivered or mailed to:
