Once a student in Trinity College has declared a major, the responsibility for advising that student shifts from the Pre-Major Advisor and the Pre-Major Advising Center to the department of the major and the academic dean who has responsibility for majors in the designated area. Students should confer with their departmental advisors when necessary or desired, but they should meet with their advisors at least once before every registration period to review goals, plans for achieving them, and any problems encountered or anticipated. The personal identification number (PIN) required for ACES online registration is provided by the department to the student, generally by the students' major department advisors.
Students who need to discuss special regulations and procedures, such as course loads, course changes, course eligibility, and leaves of absence, or to resolve problems should see their academic dean. Students may also see their academic dean for advice and consultation on matters concerning academic planning, future goals, and their current work.
Ultimately, it is the joint responsibility of the departments and the academic deans to clear students for graduation. This is a two-step process. For Program I students, the department, through the Director of Undergraduate Studies, certifies that the student has completed the requirements for at least one academic major. For Program II students, the Dean for Program II students certifies that the student has completed his/her approved Program II. The final certification step for students in both Program I and II is completed when the academic dean certifies that the student has completed all graduation requirements.
