Multimedia Classrooms

More than two-thirds of Arts & Sciences classrooms are currently equipped with multimedia projection equipment.  For a list of classroom resources, see Arts & Sciences Classroom Support Page.

  • Reservations

Classroom reservations must be made through the Registrar’s Office; to contact the Registrar, e-mail classroom-reservations@duke.edu or call 684-3759.  A detailed list of individual classroom media capabilities, capacity, equipment specifics, and reservations contacts can be found using the A&S classroom search tool.

  • Classroom Support

There are three ways to reserve equipment or request multimedia classroom support.  Use the Arts & Sciences Multimedia Request Form, send e-mail to askav@aas.duke.edu, or call Arts & Sciences Multimedia Support (660-3088).

  • Training

Training on the use of all classroom equipment is available as a routine part of classroom support.

Teaching with Technology

The Center for Instructional Technology is a university-wide center focused on the effective application of information technology to teaching and learning. The CIT works with faculty on instructional computing projects, offers grants, training programs and informational events, introduces initiatives, and collaborates with other groups to assess the impact and effectiveness of instructional technology initiatives.

Blackboard, an online system for creating course web pages, discussion groups, and other course-related tools, is supported by the Center for Instructional Technology (CIT). Blackboard provides an easily customizable online instructional environment.

Desktop Computer Support

Arts & Sciences Computing (ASC) supports desktop computing for faculty, staff, and graduate students in Arts & Sciences.  To request assistance in getting specific equipment, or to get help for desktop software or network connections, contact your departmental computer support staff or use the Work Request Form.  You can also call the OIT Help Desk at 684-2200.

Laptop Connections in A&S Buildings

Laptops that need to be connected to a network in Arts & Sciences offices or classrooms must be registered for DHCP.

Wireless internet access is available in (and outside of) most Arts & Sciences buildings.  Information about coverage and the registration process is available at the OIT Wireless networking site.

Multimedia and Web Production

Arts & Sciences faculty, staff, and graduate students can use the multimedia production equipment and software tools in the following locations:

  • CIT Project Studio

Located in Perkins, 223-A, the project studio is a facility used by faculty and teaching staff for production work involved with CIT-supported technology projects. Seven workstations provide a variety of basic and more advanced tools for document management, multimedia creating, and web authoring.

  • OIT/ATS Multimedia Project Studio

Located in 016 Old Chemistry Building, the lab features high-end, integrated hardware and software that encourages imaginative creation and editing of graphics, Web pages, audio, and video. This studio is also available to undergraduate students.

  • Mobile Multimedia Mac Cluster (M3C)

Located in the John Hope Franklin Center (2204 Erwin Road), this wireless-equipped cluster of Apple powerbooks features a full complement of multimedia and web authoring tools, including digital music hardware and software.  Primarily a teaching facility, the M3C is available for general use during non-classroom hours on a first-come, first-served basis.  Faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students are welcome.

  • Web Solutions Team

Located in 09 West Duke Building on East Campus, WeST provides Web development, programming and consultation services. Visit their site at http://www.aas.duke.edu/west.
