Prof. William C. Donahue
Associate Professor of Germanic Languages and Literature;

Academic Director,
Duke University in Berlin
wcd2@duke.edu

Since studying abroad in Freiburg his junior year at Georgetown, Professor Donahue has returned to Germany as a fellow, professor, and, most recently, as the Berlin program's Academic Director and Summer Session Coordinator. As Academic Director, Professor Donahue plays a decisive role in the application process and the shaping of course curricula. He also acts as the primary on-campus contact for all questions regarding the Duke University in Berlin programs. Professor Donahue joined the German faculty in 2005 after serving as the Chairperson of Rutgers' Department of Germanic, Russian, and East European Languages and Literatures.

Jochen Wohlfeil
Resident Director,
Duke University in Berlin

In his role as Resident Director, Mr. Wohlfeil carefully selects students' home-stays, coordinates the semesters' course schedules, plans the program's excursions, and arranges an array of cultural activities in Berlin and its environs. Much of the program's success can be attributed to Mr. Wohlfeil's efforts to ensure that every student not only transitions to the new city, but truly flourishes in Berlin. Mr. Wohlfeil is always available and easy to approach with questions regarding academic, linguistic, or personal issues–be they in English or in German. Mr. Wohlfeil devotes much of his time and energy to the program's participants; for many program alums, he ranks highly on their lists of influential and admirable persons.

A Letter from the Program Assistants

Hey!

We are Anna and Laura, currently the Duke University in Berlin Program Assistants. Anna is a student of North American Studies, Politics, and Law at the Free University, and Laura is studying Business at the Humboldt University. During our studies, we both spent one year at Duke. We really enjoyed studying and living there and, thus, are glad to be able to keep such a strong connection to the school.

As assistants our job is to plan and organize events and activities related to the program. Our goal is to ensure that your study abroad experience will be as great as ours, and that you discover as much as possible of Berlin and German culture.

Two program elements are really important to us: First, we offer to set up and really encourage you to take part in language partnerships, as your German will only improve if you make an effort to practice with native speakers. Second, every few weeks we will organize a so-called “Stammtisch“ – an informal meeting of Duke students, language partners, friends of the program, and German students who plan on attending Duke in the near future. “Stammtisch“ is always a great opportunity for you to ask us questions, but we are also always available during our office hours and through e-mail at duke@zedat.fu-berlin.de.

We look forward to meeting all future Duke University in Berlin students!

Bis bald,

Eure Anna und Laura
