The Arts and Sciences Committee on Faculty Research  is provided with funds for the purpose of promoting Arts & Sciences faculty research activities. The committee considers matters relating to faculty research, and oversees three distinct programs: one, funding to cover the expenses of travel to and participation in professional meetings and conferences, called Arts and Sciences Professional Meeting/Conference Travel Funding; the second, an annual peer-reviewed competition for small research grants, called Arts & Sciences Council Annual Research Grants; and the third, a biannual peer-reviewed competition for funding scholarly meetings at Duke, called Arts and Sciences Council Conference Grants. These are three independent programs; a faculty member who receives funds from one in a given year is not therefore disqualified from applying to the others in that year. Faculty eligible to apply to these programs are regular rank faculty with primary appointments in departments or programs in the School of Arts & Sciences. Regular rank faculty are those in the tenure or tenure-track ranks, full-time Lecturers, those in the Professor of the Practice ranks, those in the Research Professor ranks, and Emeriti faculty. Non-regular rank faculty are not eligible.

Arts & Sciences Professional Meeting/Conference Travel Funding. This funding is available to eligible faculty who present a paper or otherwise participate in a meeting or conference program. Application for funding must be made in advance of travel on the form provided, and must be supported with documentation of participation. Reimbursable expenses are meals, lodging, transportation, parking, and registration fees. The maximum reimbursement is $1000 per fiscal year for up to two domestic trips or $1500 for up to two foreign trips. Download the Request for Professional Meeting/Conference Travel Form (Word) for details and an application.

Arts and Sciences Council Annual Research Grants. This annual competition, open to eligible faculty, offers research funds in an amount useful for pilot research projects, research write-up projects, components of larger research projects otherwise difficult to fund, and the like; currently the maximum award is $5,000. Applications must be submitted, on the application form provided, by the announced deadline in mid to late March each year; awards are announced at the end of April. Applications are reviewed by a faculty committee which is divided into three sub-committees, each composed of faculty from one of the three Arts & Sciences divisions (Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences) and reviewing applications from that division. Committee members are appointed by the Dean upon recommendation of the Executive Committee of the Arts & Sciences Council. For more information and an application, download the Annual Research Grant Announcement (available in Word and PDF format).

Arts and Sciences Council Conference Grants.  This new program of biannual competitive grants offers awards up to $5,000 to offset the costs of hosting scholarly meetings at Duke. Deadlines for application depend on the date of the intended conference. If your conference will occur between July 1 and December 31, your deadline is February 13. Conferences occurring during Spring have a deadline of September 12.  For more information and an application, download the Arts and Sciences Council Conference Grant Proposal form (available in Word and Writable PDF format).

The program is being administered through the offices of Arts and Sciences Administration. Please direct any inquiries to Maryscot Mullins, 109 Allen Building, phone: 668-2755, e-mail: mmullins@duke.edu .
