Synopsis of course content
Despite all the claims to the contrary, the South has never been another country. In fact, the upheavals, movements, trends, and struggles that marked the South throughout the long 20th century reflect the challenges and changes within American society at large. This class explores the region’s history from the 1860s until the 2000s with an eye to the South’s place in the United States. How did white supremacy and Jim Crow, the black freedom struggle, radical and reactionary politics, and waves of economic development affect American democracy and the consolidation of industrial capitalism? Was the South an exception to, or the ultimate expression of, Americanism?
