Synopsis of course content
This course is designed to give the voice student facility in the preparation and performance of song and aria texts in German and French, using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Class and homework will include intensive study of German and French pronunciation principles and rules, transcription of assigned song texts into IPA, and preparation of songs in these languages for in-class performance and critique. This course is usually preceded by MUS 57S, Italian and English Diction; students who have not completed MUS 57S should be prepared to do extra study of IPA at the beginning of the semester.

Assignments
Learn the International Phonetic Alphabet as it applies to German and French. Learn the rules and exceptions for pronouncing German and Freench. Transcribe assigned song texts. Practice pronunciation. Sing assigned songs in class for critique.
Exams
Quizzes on IPA and rules for pronunciation of German and French.

Completion of homework assignments; quizzes; growth in pronunciation skills; class performance of songs with correct pronunciation.
Additional Information
Students who have not completed MUSIC 57S, Italian and English Diction for Singers, will need to do intensive catch-up work at the beginning of the semester in this course.
