Synopsis of course content
Four Operas by Richard Strauss: Salome, Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier, and Ariadne auf Naxos. It is hard to think of four more contrasting operas by one composer. All are unified, however, in their independent response to the musical legacy of Richard Wagner.

Assignments
Readings, analysis, class discussion, final research paper.
Exams
No final exam.
Term Papers
A substantial (~15 pp.) research project on a topic of the student's choice.
Grade to be based on
Contribution to class discussion and quality of individual research.
