Synopsis of course content
This course seeks to provide an overview of issues in the history of Western music, 1650–1850. We will cover the main forms, genres, styles, and works of the so-called Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic periods, while also seeking to explore broader issues both for the period and for the practice of history in general.
We will be concerned not just with the what, where, and when of music in this period, but also with the how and the why in terms of music and of its wider political, social and cultural contexts.
