Synopsis of course content
After a brief survey of pre-modern genocides in settler colonies, we will concentrate on state-sponsored mass murder in World War I Turkey (the Armenian genocide), Nazi Germany, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, anti-Communist Guatemala, former Yugoslavia, and Rwanda. Throughout the semester we will follow the events in the Sudan/ Darfur and East Congo. The core readings will be by or about victims and by historians of comparative genocides.
Exams
An in-class mid-term exam.
A take home final exam due on the date for the final exam.
Term Papers
In five short (4-7 page) research essays students will develop skill in recognizing claims in the material we read, structuring an argument, searching efficiently, managing a data base, and writing clearly.
