Synopsis of course content
What does the media cover re higher education? How do they do it? How do institutions try to shape(and respond) to media coverage? The seminar will focus on a number of issues including financing of higher ed,athletics, town-gown relations, academic freedom and political correctness,town-gown relations, student culture, conflict of interest, rankings, scandals and globalization.
Assignments
In addition to required readings, students will be expected to read regularly and to discuss coverage in the Duke Chronicle, Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Durham Herald Sun, Raleigh News and Observer, New York Times.
Exams
None
Term Papers
There will be a 3-5 page mid term paper and a final paper in the form of a three-part series of articles that could be submitted for publication on a topic to be negotiated by the student and faculty member.
Grade to be based on
class participation: 25 percent
mid term paper: 20 percent
final paper: 55 percent
