Synopsis of course content
This is a seminar course focusing on Greek texts in translation, with some introduction to the material culture (art, archaeology, and inscriptions) to put the texts in their proper contexts. While we will be spending the majority of the semester covering the Archaic and Classical Periods (roughly the 8th through 4th centuries BC), some time will also be devoted to the Bronze Age and to the Hellenistic Period. Readings will be drawn from the realms of epic, lyric, drama, history, law, and philosophy. This material will be occasionally supplemented by works of modern scholarship.
