Synopsis of course content
Our studies address the harmonic and contrapuntal techniques of 18th-century music from Bach through Mozart. We will develop fluency in strict two-part counterpoint (species-counterpoint exercises) and in four-part polyphonic writing. With these skills as a foundation, we will progress to creative compositional work in variation forms, and in trio-sonata and keyboard textures. Supplementing these composition assignments will be analytic explorations of a range of 18th-century composers, as expressed in written papers about the music’s structures and expressive means. Through composition, analysis, and theoretic inquiry, we will deepen our understanding of a style that has remained a foundation of polyphonic practice for musicians of diverse outlooks.
