Synopsis of course content
This seminar will investigate the orchestra and orchestral music in the
Western tradition of classical art music. The principal emphasis will be on
major works from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries, including
composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Mahler,
Prokofiev, and Bartok. Topics treated will include the evolution of the
modern orchestra, the art of orchestration, and the various uses of the
orchestra within and outside the concert hall.
