Synopsis of course content
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with magazine journalism through analysis of contemporary magazines; close reading and discussion of magazine stories, classic and current alike; experience in developing feature ideas, performing background research, interviewing, writing, and revising two major stories; consideration of how design elements contribute to telling stories; and collaborative work in conceptualizing a magazine.

Assignments
Major writing assignments: two feature stories involving considerable research and reporting, one of which will be presented as a magazine layout and supplemented with a podcast; brief response papers to the readings; an analysis of a particular magazine. Reading assignments: a set of current and classic examples of magazine journalism. Team project: the conceptualizing of a magazine.

Term Papers
The major writing assignments will constitute the equivalent of term papers.
Grade to be based on
Writing assignments, the team magazine project, participation in class (class participation is key, and students are expected to be thoughtfully engaged in discussion).
Additional Information
Permission required for enrollment. Students should submit to the instructor a 2-page intellectual autobiography focusing on their background as readers, writers, and consumers of the media.
