Bulletin Course Description "Critical Period" in language development, the role of 'motherese,' infant speech perception, innovative word creation, telegraphic speech, bilingualism and second language learning, learning to read, language, cognition and culture, and language pathology. Focus on learning to critically evaluate empirical research papers from various areas of language development. Appropriateness of hypotheses, methodology and analyses, and whether or not the data the researchers gather warrants the conclusions they draw. Instructor: Mazuka

Synopsis of course content
This is a seminar on selected topics in language
development. Topics will be selected from a wide
range of research areas: first language acquisition
(phonology, syntax and semantics), second language
acquisition, bilingualism, language pathology and
language and cognition.
Textbooks
No textbooks. Selected book chapters and journal
articles will be available on e-reserve.
Assignments
Students will write a short essay (2-3 pages)
summarizing and criticizing the assigned readings for
each week. A group project mid-semester.
Exams
No exams.
Term Papers
Students write a research proposal on a topic of
their choice.
Grade to be based on
Weekly essays, group project, research proposal, term paper, in-class presentations, and class participation.
Additional Information
The course is designed to encourage interdisciplinary
discussion, and students of various academic fields
are encouraged to enroll.
