Synopsis of course content
According to national surveys, as much as 40% of children in the US are reading below grade levels. Are we on the verge of a "reading crisis?" Why is learning to read so hard for some children but not others? What is the best method to teach reading? In this seminar we will explore many topics related to reading development, including, but not limited to, cognitive processes in reading, development of reading skills, reading instruction, public policies, and dyslexia. Readings will be drawn from research journals, government reports, popular media, and websites. Class discussion is a vital part of the class.
