Synopsis of course content
The first part of the course will explore the nature of law. Focus will
be on three of the most prominent theories – legal positivism,
natural law, and legal realism. We will consider both classic
accounts and contemporary treatments of each of these theories.
The second part of the course eamines the nature of legal reasoning by considering a number of cases in the common law.
The last part of the course examines the issue of campus speech and speech codes.
Assignments
15-50 pages for each class meeting.

Term Papers
Three short papers and a final paper.
Grade to be based on
Written work and class participation.
