Synopsis of course content
During the 2009-10 academic year the Duke Dance Program will celebrate
the centenary of the first appearance of the Ballet Russe in Paris. The Ballet
Russe introduced musical compositions that profoundly shaped 20th-century
music, including "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," "Petrushka," "Le Sacre,"
"Jeux," "Parade," among others.

Students in this seminar will study scores and documentary videos of these
compositions, examples of Stravinsky's collaboration with Balanchine, and
recent contemporary dance compositions by composers such as Michael
Torke, Michael Gordon, John Mackey, and others. We will also work closely
with faculty and students in the Dance Program on new works which will be
set to choreography and presented at ChoreoLab, the Dance Program's
mainstage showcase, in Spring 2010.
