Synopsis of course content
Music and the visual arts are among the primary elements of human culture.
Many artists and composers combine the two in compositions, recordings,
paintings, sculptures, architecture, calligraphy, movies, commercials, and a
BGM. Today, viewing images and listening to music at the same time is such
an everyday occurrence that the experience is taken for granted. We use our
ears and eyes so intuitively that we rarely ask such questions as: What is the
history of collaboration between musicians and artists? What is the effect of
the combination on the total meaning? Can music depict objects in the
manner of a painting? Can a painting be musical? Is there something that can
be properly called "a synesthesis"? What are some of the implications of
music-visual work in our society? These and other relevant questions will
help explain what is going on in our culture and in some of the greatest
artistic achievements of the past. The course will cover a wide range, from
classical symphony to visual rock, in which music and the visual arts
interweave. Through discussions and analysis, we will examine acoustic-
visual interaction from historical, cultural, theoretical, and aesthetical
perspectives.
