Bulletin Course Description
Introduction to film studies with emphasis on uses and functions of sound, film music, sound and other ¿aural objects¿ such as the voice, through a selected body of works. Topics include representations of sound, music and voice, the functions of pre-existing music and their relations with the moving image in cinema and television; gendered representations of music and voice in pop and rock music videos; Hollywood practices and non-Hollywood practices. Synopsis of course content
Through the study of selected topics, this course places music in a broader
historical and cultural context and aims to present other ways to understand
the role and functions of Western art music in arts, society, and politics.
Topics covered will include: film music and musical conventions; the
consumption of the classical canon in low/high culture (Beethoven, Chopin,
Mozart), musical exoticisms in Classical and popular music; music as political
message.

Assignments
A reasonable amount of weekly reading/listening/viewing will be required
before the relevant class, in order to give to the students a basic knowledge of
the topic that will be discussed during the class (literary texts, musical works,
movies). Students will have to give at least two short oral reports about a
specific reading/listening/viewing.

Term Papers
Four short written assignments (this course has a W designation).
Grade to be based on
35% class participation, short oral reports about the
reading/listening/viewing
assignments
30% Four response papers
35% Final paper (including a short oral presentation of the topic of the paper)



Additional Information
This course is intended for nonmajors (does not normally count as a music
major requirement).
