Synopsis of course content
We will explore the development of Latin language, literature, and literary culture from Late Antiquity through the fourteenth century, reading (in Latin) authors such as Augustine, Paulinus of Nola, Gregory of Tours, Bede, Einhard, Hrotsvita, Hildegard of Bingen, Heloise and Abelard, and Petrarch. Through selections from these authors, the course will trace the development of genres such as (auto)biography, letter writing, historiography, epic, lyric and drama.
Textbooks
F.E. Harrison, Millenium: A Latin Reader A.D. 374 - 1374.
Other texts will be supplied.
Assignments
Readings in Latin to be translated; class presentation.
Exams
Midterm translation quiz.
Term Papers
Term paper (12 - 15 pages)
Grade to be based on
Class participation (45%), presentation (15%), quiz (15%) term paper (25%).
