Synopsis of course content
In this course the geology and paleontology of
Wyoming will be studied in a five-day field trip during
fall break. The class will fly to Salt Lake City or Jackson
Hole, rent vehicles, and visit a variety of sites. These
will include Fossil Butte National Monument,
Yellowstone National Park, Grand Tetons National
Park, and a private quarry in southwest Wyoming to
collect fossils, including Green River fish. During the
trip, the students will study the geology and natural
history of the region. Each student will be expected to
cover airfare and some incidental expenses; other
costs will be covered by the Division of Earth and
Ocean Sciences.

During the semester, the class will meet
for a lecture/seminar discussion of different aspects of
the paleontology and geology of the area. Students will
lead discussions on various topics that will be
considered in the field and will select a topic for
independent research. The results of the research will
be presented in a research paper and oral presentation
at the end of the class.

Please note that we will not be visiting Dinosaur National Monument or Fossil Butte on the field trip this semester, due to time constraints.
