Synopsis of course content
This course will focus on placing Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales in their literary and cultural contexts and considering how, and why, Chaucer has subsequently been positioned as the Father of English Poetry. We will read a selection of individual tales drawn from Chaucer’s compendious narrative. No previous knowledge of medieval culture or of Chaucer’s English is assumed. Course requirements include weekly Blackboard posts, at least one seminar presentation, and a research paper.
