Synopsis of course content
An introduction to the literature and culture of England before 1100. The primary focus will be on learning to read the written language of this period, beginning with short, simple prose texts and poems and arriving at some of the most sophisticated and fascinating literary writing in the English language (including “The Wanderer”, “The Dream of the Rood”, and “The Wife’s Lament”). Old English initially looks very different from Modern English, but it becomes familiar quickly: quizzes and a short final exam will help to ensure that you become comfortable with the language, while a short paper will give you a chance to gain a deeper understanding of the writings that most interest you.
