Synopsis of course content
students will study the scholarship of literacy and college level teaching/tutoring practices. By writing responses to readings, observing and giving tutorials, keeping a tutoring journal, and completing a final research project, students will have an opportunity to improve their critical thinking, academic writing, and peer tutoring skills. Practice peer tutoring will take place during the first half of the semester and actual tutoring the second half. The course readings include selections from composition studies, literacy studies, and writing center/tutoring theory. The goal of this course is to create more critically proficient students of literacy, writing, and peer tutoring theory and practice. Upon completion of the course, students are eligible to apply for a paid tutoring position at the Writing Studio as an Undergraduate Writing Tutor paired with a Writing 20 section. Class limit: 12 students. Enrollment by permission only. Contact Vicki Russell, Director of the Writing Studio, at vgr@duke.edu
