Bulletin Course Description Principles of developmental, social, and cognitive psychology as applied to education, with a focus on how children learn. Examination of the impact on learning of race, class, gender, and ethnicity, including a comparative analysis of cultural differences in American schools. Synopsis of course content
The field of educational psychology focuses on human growth and development in educational settings. Educational psychology involves the study of such questions as: How do people learn? How do the characteristics of the learner (individual differences, personality, cultural background,') influence learning? How can classrooms and schools be organized to facilitate learning? What are the most effective ways to teach? How should teachers approach classroom management and discipline? How can principles of developmental, social, and cognitive psychology be applied to education? The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of ways educational and psychological principles are beneficial in working with others in a teaching, advising, or counseling capacity.This course requires a service experience outside of class time.
Textbooks
Approximately 100 pages per week of textbook assignments, journal articles, independent research.
Assignments
Out of Class Time Requirements:
This class is part of the LEAPS Program and the Scholarship with a Civic Mission Program. It involves a service learning experience which will require two to three hours per week outside of class.
Exams
Two midterms and a take-home final.
Term Papers
No term papers. However, several reflection papers are required.
Grade to be based on
Equal emphasis is placed on attendance, class participation, the service learning experience, written assignments, and the exams.
Additional Information
Educ 118 involves a service learning experience in a local school; students complete written reflection forms in which they discuss this experience. This course will be of interest to students considering careers in teaching, counseling, social work, pediatrics, early childhood, personnel, human resources, educational policy, service learning, and related fields.
