Synopsis of course content
This course is a survey of Greek history from the Bronze Age to the 4th
century B.C. We will focus on primary sources, reading Homer's Iliad, the
histories of Thucydides and Herodotus, and Plato's Republic--four
monuments of western lit. The course is a built around a running meditation
on cooperative vs competitive virtue, the relationship between individual and
state, the function of religion and law in the Greek society.
