Synopsis of course content
This course surveys the archaic and classical periods of ancient Greece (ca.
500-300 BCE), the period covering roughly the Persian Wars to Alexander the
Great. It is designed to continue where CLST 123 ends, but it is not necessary
to have taken the other course. Emphasis will be on understandings how the
material culture(s) of the Greek cultural world relate to social, historical, and
economic structures in antiquity. Archaeological and art historical methods
and models will dominate. The course will require entail mastering extensive
amounts of visual information. We will also visit the exhibits and storerooms
of the Nasher Museum as part of the course.
