Synopsis of course content
Book Illustration is an upper level design course introducing students to the concepts and techniques of making a fine art book. The course will involve the critical analysis of designing a book from its initial concept to the finished product. Using a variety of media or the student's choice (including drawing, photography, painting, printmaking and digital media) the student will be exposed to different book forms (codex, accordion fold, Japanese bout, flip and portfolio) and book concepts (grouping, serial and sequential studies) through different class assignments. The use of typography will also be addressed. Four books will be completed during the course, including a full semester book project of a work written either by the student or adapted from another author.

The following texts will be used throughout the course and can be purchased at the Duke Bookstore:
The Century of Artists Books, Johanna Drucker, Text in the Book Format, Keith Smith, and Creating Handmade Books,Alisa Golden. Additional articles will be assigned during the semester.
