Bulletin Course Description
A documentary approach to the study of local communities through video production projects assigned by the course instructor. Working closely with these groups, students explore issues or topics of concern to the community. Students complete an edited video as their final project. Assignments
Students complete an edited video as their final project.
Exams
None.
Grade to be based on
Short assignments will be evaluated one week after they are due. Each student will received a written evaluation on the final film at the end of the semester.

Quality of work (assignments and final film): 50%
Professionalism (care with equipment, willingness to collaborate: 30%
Attendance, class participation, quizzes: 20%

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Gary Hawkins is a visiting lecturer at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. He has taught non-fiction filmmaking at the Center for the last six years, and directing for nine years at the NCSA School of Filmmaking. Gary is a Sundance Fellow, a contributing writer to the Oxford American Magazine and a winner of the Emmy Award. His recent productions include two narrative features, “Elroy Nights” and “Shotgun Stories”, and two ongoing documentaries, “The Rough South of Larry Brown” and “What Hollywood Did to the South.”
