Synopsis of course content
Seminar/ laboratory dance course introducing the movement, music, philosophy, socio-political history, and culture of the Afro-Brazilian fight/dance/game of capoeira, created by African slaves in Brazil. Its persecution through the 19th century; its 20th century progress as a vital part of Brazilian national identity; its ensuing globalization. Race, class and gender politics which shaped capoeira; study of its movement, music and ethos. Writing assignments integrate materials and experience from seminar and lab.
