Synopsis of course content
A seminar and dance laboratory course that introduces the movement,
music,
philosophy, socio-political history, and culture of the Afro-Brazilian
fight/dance/game of capoeira. Seminar classes focus on the race, class
and
gender politics that have shaped capoeira. We will examines the
creation of
capoeira by African slaves in Brazil, its persecution through the 19th
century,
its 20th century development as a celebrated part of Brazilian national
identity, and its current globalization. Studio classes focus on the
movement,
music and ethos of capoeira. Frequent writing assignments integrate
materials and experience from seminar and lab.
