Synopsis of course content
Conditions of admission: Open to those who have taken Art History 189A, but not to those who have taken Art History 189 (pre-2004).

Synopsis:
Survey of architecture from the 1920s to the present. The course considers the Modernism of the Bauhaus and the post-World War II Corporate International Style as a background to the architecture of the later 20th and early 21st century. Among the buildings considered are late works by Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, as well as structures by Gehry, Graves, Eisenman, Viñoly, Koolhaas and the Disney Imagineers. Political, ideological, aesthetic, and technical aspects of construction are investigated though architects’ and theorists’ writings. Open to students who have taken Art History 189A.

No previous study of architecture or art history is necessary.
Assignments
Reading include works by Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Rudolph, Eero Saarinen, Reyner Banham, Alison and Peter Smithson, Fred Jameson, Jacques Derrida, Philip Johnson, Mark Wigley, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.
Grade to be based on
Grades will be based on three quizzes and a short paper.
