Ethical challenges in environmental conservation. Topics include the philosophical basis and challenges of mankind¿s responsibility to the natural world; prioritization of often conflicting conservation efforts; balancing the needs of humans and the environment; the disputed role of scientists as advocates; and the philosophical and political obstacles to conservation efforts. Synopsis of course content
Ethical challenges of environmental conservation. Examination of a range of potential ethical challenges in environmental conservation, including prioritization of conservation efforts, the role of scientists as advocates, and balancing the needs of humans and nature. Case studies used to illustrate particular challenges, focusing on issues at scales ranging from local to global. Student-led discussions and writings draw from readings in environmental ethics, restoration ecology, and conservation biology. Assignments include argumentative essays, editorial comments, and policy memos.
