Spring 2009

Familiarize yourself with the application form, which is available online from the Institute of International Education (IIE) .https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/usa/. You are given access to the application form, when it becomes available on May 1, 2009, once you have completed the Fulbright registration process . For your application to be considered, you must submit it both electronically and in hard copy. Download and carefully review participating country summaries for the 2009-2010 competition. Pay particular attention to the language and affiliation requirements, as well as to any other country-specific conditions. Since Fulbright requirements change very little from year to year, you do not need the current application in order to begin the application process. Start thinking about your plans and drafting the materials necessary for the campus application as early as possible to allow for reflection and revision.

Spring 2009

Decide whether you wish to apply. If you do:

  • Contact three referees who are willing to support your application. Select referees who will comment favorably, not only on your personal qualities, but on the merit and feasibility of your project, and your ability to complete it successfully. Get summer contact information for these referees.
  • If the country in which you wish to study requires that you be formally affiliated with a recognized institution, ask scholars at such institutions for their advice and support for your project. A formal letter of affiliation will add great weight to your application and is required for Duke students.

Summer 2009

Consult the table of recently successful Duke Fulbright candidates. Applications from the 2007 and 2008 competitions can be searched by country, field and level (undergrad/grad.) Be sure that you are reading essays corresponding to your academic level (e.g., graduating senior, Ph.D. student).
