INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS:
Twelve Churchill Scholarships, tenable for one year, are awarded annually for graduate study in engineering, mathematics, and the natural and physical sciences at Churchill College, Cambridge University.
ELIGIBILITY/SELECTION:
An applicant for nomination by the Duke Churchill Committee must be a U.S. citizen enrolled at Duke University or a recent graduate enrolled at one of the other participating colleges and universities. Eligibility to take up the scholarship requires that the candidate be between the ages of 19 and 26, hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a US college, and not have attained a doctorate. The criteria for selection include: (1) outstanding achievement in academic work as indicated by course grades, (2) scores on the Graduate Record Examination "GRE" General Test , (3) capacity for original, creative work as shown by special recognitions or letters of references, and (4) intellectual leadership, character and adaptability and good health. Duke may nominate up to two students each year for consideration by the Churchill Foundation as scholars.

VALUE OF THE AWARD:
The scholarship covers all tuition and fees and includes a living allowance paid in pounds sterling, either 10,000 or 12,000 depending upon the length of the course of study. In addition there is a travel grant of up to $1,000, and the possibility of an additional Special Research Grant.. In all, the Churchill Scholarship, at current rates of exchange, is worth between $46,000 and $50,000, depending on the course of study.
APPLICATION:
The preliminary campus application includes all components of the official
application forms that can be downloaded from the Churchill web site http://www.winstonchurchillfoundation.org/,
with the exception of the photographs:
1. One typed request for "Laboratory Placement"; here state preference for placement in a specific research laboratory and explain. If none, please indicate. This request for "Laboratory Placement" is Part 1 of the Scholarship Application form entitled, "Statement of Purpose".
2. One typed "Personal Statement"; this is a brief autobiography, including an account of your interest in science, your reasons for wishing to attend Churchill College, and your career plans. This "Personal Statement" is Part 2 of the Scholarship Application Form entitled "Statement of Purpose".
3. A resume/outline of honors and activities including the following sections: titles and advisors of previous and ongoing research projects, publications, science honors and activities, other honors and activities. (Students nominated by the Committee will eventually transfer this information to the official application to Cambridge University.)
4. One transcript from each college/university attended.
5. Four letters of recommendation.
6. Scores on the GRE (general test). Applicants should select a test date that will assure receipt of the scores at the Churchill Foundation in November. Applicants may take the written GREs or the computer, walk-in tests. Information on these computer tests and where they may be taken may be secured by calling 1-800-473-2255. Also see the GRE web site. MCAT scores may be substituted for the GRE. Engineering students are not required to take a subject test.
The applicant must request the Educational Testing Service to report scores to Duke (as his or her undergraduate institution) and to forward the scores to the Winston Churchill Foundation. Instructions are on the Scholarship Application.

- A student should apply early in the fall to Churchill College, Cambridge University.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Shortly after receiving the preliminary application, the Duke University Churchill Scholarship Committee will notify applicants whether interviews will be necessary. Based on these interviews and the submitted application material, the Committee nominates no more than two candidates from the applicants. The application of each nominee is sent to the Churchill Foundation in New York City where it is evaluated by the Churchill Foundation Screening Committee (comprised of experts in various fields, who have all been Churchill Scholars). Nominees are notified by the Churchill Foundation in January whether or not they have received the Screening Committee's endorsement. Then the Churchill Foundation makes the final decision on awards and announces the list of Churchill Scholars about April 15.
