Student peace projects win awards
Two groups of Duke students each won $10,000 awards from 100 Projects for Peace, a $1 million competition funded by philanthropist Kathryn Wasserman Davis to commemorate her 100th birthday.

Prehealth advising team in place
With the retirement of the long-time director of the Health Professions Advising Center, Duke has created a transition team of advisors for undergraduates and alumni applying to medical, dental, veterinary, and other health profession schools.

AAAS program to be a department
The Board of Trustees approved elevating the African and African American Studies Program to departmental status. Academic departments at Duke offer undergraduate and graduate degrees. Because the AAAS program currently offers an undergraduate degree and a graduate certificate, it already functions much like a department, said Arts & Sciences Dean of the Social Sciences Sarah Deutsch.

Co-chairs Robert Thompson and Larry Moneta said in a statement that the steering committee has largely completed gathering data and is "entering the phrase of our work of interpreting what we have heard and learned and formulating a number of recommendations."

Prehealth adviser retiring
Kay H. Singer G'77, associate dean of Trinity College and director of the Health Professions Advising Center, will retire at the end of January 2007. Singer has successfully guided over 3,000 Duke undergraduate and alumni through the process of applying to health profession schools. "The success rate of Duke graduates for admission to medical, dental, veterinary, and other health profession programs would not be what it is without her remarkable judgment, her standing in the field, and the personal care and concern for students which she so readily demonstrates,” said Trinity College Dean Robert J. Thompson.
