Alvin Crumbliss Alvin L. Crumbliss is a professor in the department of chemistry. His research is focused on the biological aspects of inorganic chemistry, with an emphasis on the biochemistry of iron and mechanisms of metal ion transport in the environment and living systems.


Crumbliss has an AB degree from Knox College and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Northwestern University. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Southern California before coming to Duke as an assistant professor in 1970. While at Duke he has served as Director of Undergraduate Studies and Chairman of the Chemistry Department. Crumbliss was the recipient of the David and Janet Vaughn Brooks Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Duke University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award, and the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award. International recognition of his research includes a French Academy of Sciences Chair in Strasbourg, France and visiting faculty positions in Paris, Grenoble and Oxford.
