A&S Information Technology Security Policy Definitions

 
   

A&S Network (ASN)
The computer network interconnecting A&S DukeNet access points in buildings and facilities using IP numbers assigned within subnets managed by Arts and Sciences.
 
A&S IT Security Team
Members include Melissa Mills, Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences for Computing; Hannah Arps, IT Support Project Coordinator; Chris Cramer, University IT Security Officer, Forrest Smith, Senior Consultant, A&S Networks; Yunliang Yu, Senior Systems Adminstrator, Mathematics; and Feri Zsuppan, A&S Director of Systems & Networks.
 
Computers
General term meant to apply to all computers and other digital devices with a direct connection to the A&S Network. See related policy.
 
Computer Network
A data communication system that interconnects computer systems at different sites. DukeNet is the Duke University computer network. The Common Services Network (CSN) is Duke Health Systems computer network.
 
Designated Arts & Sciences Systems Administrator
An Arts & Sciences systems administrator working within the University's IT security policies and the guidelines established by the Macgroup and the PCgroup under the leadership of the A&S director of Desktop Networks & Services, and the Unixgroup under the leadership of the A&S director of systems and networks.
 
Direct Connection
Any connection to DukeNet using one of the IP numbers assigned within the subnets managed by Arts and Sciences.
 
Outsourcing
Making use of the professional computing services of personnel other than A&S or OIT systems administrators.
 
Server/Remote Access Host Machine
All machines running any "remote access service". Examples of remote access services are FTP server, Web server, Telnet or SSH server, Timbuktu Host, PCAnywhere Host, Unix daemons, or any NT remote access services. See related policy.
 
Systems Administrator/IT Professional
Individual employed by A&S or OIT responsible for system and network support of computing resources in a local, departmental or multidepartmental environment. This could be a single person or a shared responsibility among several individuals. The title of this person varies by department. The systems administrator acts as the primary contact person in case of a security event.
