Installing Internet Explorer 5.5
Part of making the most secure Windows machines possible includes running Windows Update from Internet Explorer for installing the most recent Critical Updates. Windows NT installs with a non-java version (IE 2) incapable of running Windows Update. Windows 2000 installs with IE 5.0. To enable Windows Update and to have the most secure Microsoft browser, Internet Explorer should be upgraded to version 5.5.
To check the version installed, first open IE. Then under Help in the menu bar, click About Internet Explorer. This information window will display the version of IE as well as Service Pack level and IE hotfixes run. For machines that have IE 4.0 or greater, the easiest way to install IE 5.5 is using Windows Update. For Windows NT machines that only have the default IE 2 install, there is a small (500KB) install file. This file, as well as the Windows Update method, will download the ~10MB of program files from Microsoft, so an internet connection is needed to run the install. The details differ slightly depending the operating system.
