Installation and Configuration

This document describes the installation and configuration details of Firefox 1.0 that has been used to create the Prism Deploy installation package found at \\aas107\asc\diffpax\Firefox\firefox1.exe.


  1. Installing Firefox 1.0
    • The installation begins by running the setup file \\aas107\asc\appmedia\firefox\Foxfire Setup 1.0.exe.
    • A "Firefox Setup" window will appear. Click Next to continue.
    • A "Software License Agreement" window will appear. Select I Accept the terms... and click Next to accept the agreement and continue.
    • A "Setup Type" window will appear. Select Custom as shown and click Next.


       

    • An "Install Folder" window will appear. Click Next to choose the default installation folder C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.
    • A "Select Components" window will appear. Check both Developer Tools and Quality Feedback Agent as shown and click Next to continue.


       

    • A "Setup Up Shortcuts" window will appear. Uncheck In my Quick Launch bar as shown and click Next.


       

    • A "Summary" window will appear. Click Next to begin installing Firefox.
    • After installation, an "Install Complete" window will appear. Uncheck Use Firefox Start as my Home Page and click Finish to launch Firefox 1.0.

  2. Configuring Firefox 1.0
    • The first time Firefox is run, it will attempt to import bookmarks and settings from other installed browsers. An "Import Wizard" window will appear. For the image, nothing was imported, so click Don't import anything as shown and click Next to continue running Firefox.


       

    • By default, Firefox will attempt to become the default browser. A "Default Browser" window will appear. The package does not attempt to set the default browser, so uncheck Always perform this check when starting Firefox as shown and click No.


       

    • To continue the configuration, under the Tools menu, click Options.
    • An "Options" window will appear with categories on the left and settings on the right.
      • General
        • Click the first category General.
        • Under "Home Page," next to "Location(s):" enter http://www.aas.duke.edu.
        • Under "Default Browser" uncheck Firefox should check... as shown.


           

      • Privacy
        • Click the second category Privacy
        • There are a number of subsections of Privacy that are compressed. The first is "History." Set the history to 0 days as shown.


           

        • Click the + next to "Saved Form Information" to open it up. Uncheck Save information I enter in web pages... as shown.


           

        • Open "Saved Passwords." Uncheck Remember Passwords as shown.


           

        • Open "Download Manager History." From the drop down menu next to "Remove files from the Download Manager" select When Firefox exits as shown.


           

        • Open "Cookies." From the drop down menu next to "Keep Cookies" select Until I close Firefox as shown.


           

        • Open "Cache." Next to "Use up to" enter 10000 KB as shown.


           

      • Web Features
        • The third category Web Features remains unchanged.
      • Downloads
        • Click the fourth category Downloads to configure download options.
        • Under "Download Folder" select Ask me where to save every file.
        • Under "Download Manager" uncheck Show Download Manager window... as shown.


           

      • Advanced
        • Click the fifth category Advanced.
        • Under "Browsing" check Use smooth scrolling.
        • For "Tabbed Browsing," under "Open links from other applications in a new window as shown.


           

        • The other sections remain unchanged.
  3. Bookmarks
    • By default Firefox contains a couple of generic bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder, which appear just below the address bar. The package replaces these generic bookmarks with bookmarks specific to Arts & Sciences.
    • Included Bookmarks:

      • Arts & Sciences Help: //www.aas.duke.edu/help/
      • Duke University: //www.duke.edu/
      • Duke WebMail: //www.mail.duke.edu/
      • Online@Duke: //webacct.acpub.duke.edu/online/
      • Firefox Start Page: //www.google.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:offical (this is the default home page for Firefox)
    • Note: These bookmarks will be erased if settings from another browser are imported.
