Other Business:

The committee double-checked the revised Charter (1998 version), considered it still acceptable, and is waiting for the approval from the Academic Council.

Melissa gave an extensive overview of the budget process and the current 1998-99 budget. One of the committee's primary jobs is to advise her while developing the budget request for 1999-2000. She also reported on the staff and support situation across Arts and Sciences, with special emphasis on the situation in the Humanities where there is a need for more distributed support personnel.

The committee also considered up-coming agenda items. It was pointed out that Instructional Technology (IT) is very broad in scope, and includes, among other things, advanced technology in the classroom along with WEB support for activities outside the classroom. A major priority over the next year or two will be to develop a rational resource allocation scheme for IT. Security was also discussed. Melissa described some serious break-in that took place last year. George, Melissa, and others pointed out that security absorbs a huge of staff time. Prompted by some serious previous breakins, the Math department has developed a highly effective and user-friendly secure network system that could serve as a model for the rest of Arts and Sciences.
